SOUTH KOREA: “Domestic adoption of children promoted in South Korea”

Over the last several years, the South Korean government has aimed to increase the number of children adopted in Korea and decrease the number of children adopted internationally as means of addressing the country’s falling birth rate. This task has proven to be a hard one, because Koreans have traditionally shunned adoption as there is a strong emphasis on bloodlines. Despite the government’s efforts, more than 2,000 children have been adopted internationally within the last two years; the majority of adoptions have occurred in the United States.
