ARIZONA: “Bill gives married couples adoption preference” 02.18.2010 | Adoption
By: Howard Fischer This week, the Arizona House passed House Bill 2148, which gives married couples preference when placing children for adoption. The bill will require the Department of Economic Security (DES) to give "primary consideration to placement with a married couple," allowing DES to consider a single person "only if a qualified married couple is not available,” the single person is a relative of the child, or the only alternative is extended foster care. DES may choose a single person as a placement over a married couple if the child and single person already have a meaningful and healthy relationship or if it is in the child’s best interest.
